APF: Advanced Exploration and Development Support Sub-Stream

The Aboriginal Participation Fund (APF) – Advanced Exploration and Development Support Sub-Stream provides up to $15,000 in annual funding to support Aboriginal communities in Ontario in responding to advanced mineral exploration and mine development activity in their territories.

Overview of the APF: Advanced Exploration and Development Support Sub-Stream program:

The Advanced Exploration and Development Support Sub-Stream of the Aboriginal Participation Fund (APF) is designed to help First Nations and Aboriginal communities in areas of high mineral development activity build the internal capacity necessary to review and respond to mining project notifications from the Ministry of Energy, Northern Development and Mines (ENDM). This sub-stream targets non-technical support needs and assists communities in processing regulatory notices, participating in consultation and engagement, and coordinating internal responses. Communities that already have a Mineral Development Advisor (MDA) may also apply if their workload requires additional resources.

  • Eligibility Requirements:
  • Eligible Applicants:
    • Aboriginal communities in Ontario
    • Located in regions of high mineral development activity
    • May already have or may not have a Mineral Development Advisor (MDA)
    • Communities with MDAs can apply if they demonstrate additional capacity needs
  • Eligible Activities/Expenses:
    • Salary, wages, and mandatory employer-related costs (MERCs) for coordination staff
    • Community outreach for meetings and presentations related to mine development
    • Meeting costs (site visits, Elder honoraria, venue rental, refreshments)
    • Administrative costs (equipment or space rental, telephone, postage, office supplies)
