The Farmland Advantage Program encourages and rewards farmers and ranchers for preserving and enhancing the ecosystem services that their lands naturally provide. These services include: Water purification: Wetlands filter contaminants and improve water quality. Carbon sequestration: Grasslands and forests capture and store carbon dioxide, helping to mitigate climate change. Biodiversity conservation: Riparian areas, grasslands, and other natural habitats provide critical shelter for wildlife and fish species, including those at risk. Air purification and erosion control: Trees and vegetation reduce air pollution and protect soil integrity. The program identifies priority areas and works with producers to develop and implement Beneficial Management Practices (BMPs) tailored to their land. Common activities supported by the program include: Establishing riparian buffers to protect watercourses. Installing strategic fencing to manage livestock and protect sensitive areas. Reforestation and thinning to restore forest health. Removing debris to reduce wildfire risk. Implementing rotational grazing practices to enhance soil and plant health. The program also engages with First Nations communities and restoration organizations to ensure that culturally significant areas and natural habitats are preserved or restored. Farmers are compensated annually for their efforts to maintain and enhance these ecosystem services.
