Medium- and heavy-duty zero-emission vehicles (MHZEV)

Zero-emission vehicles are available for purchase or lease that provide consumers with iZEV Program incentives of up to $200,000.
  • Transport Canada
Overview of the Medium- and heavy-duty zero-emission vehicles (MHZEV) program:

Transportation is the second largest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Canada, accounting for a quarter of Canada's total GHG emissions. One way to reduce the amount of transportation-related GHG emissions is to put more zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) on the road.

Benefits of the Medium- and heavy-duty zero-emission vehicles (MHZEV) program:
  • A ZEV includes vehicles that are capable of producing zero exhaust emissions of criteria pollutants or greenhouse gases while operating.
  • We consider the following vehicles to be ZEVs:
  • Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs)
  • Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs)
  • Fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs)
Eligibility criteria of the Medium- and heavy-duty zero-emission vehicles (MHZEV) program:
  • To be eligible under the iMHZEV Program, a vehicle must:
  • Be a zero-emission vehicle (i.e., has the potential to produce no tailpipe emissions);
  • We consider the following to be zero-emission vehicles:
  • Battery-electric;
  • Plug-in hybrid electric; and
  • Hydrogen fuel cell;
  • Be a medium or heavy-duty vehicle (i.e., have a gross weight rating greater than 8,500 lbs);
  • Meet all of Canada's Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, where applicable;
  • Be available for order/purchase/lease in Canada;
  • Be intended for use on public streets, roads, highways or other paved surfaces;
  • Be registered in Canada in the eligible recipient organizations name, where applicable; and
  • For classes 2B and 3, be a medium-duty passenger vehicle (MDPV) with an MSRP equal to or below $100,000, or a commercial vehicle.
  • To be considered a commercial vehicle, the vehicle model must satisfy one or more of the following commercial vehicle criteria:
  • Have a seating capacity of 9 passengers or more;
  • Have a cargo area (for example, a pick-up truck box or bed) of at least 183 cm (72 in. or 6ft) in interior length; or
