The Corner Store Exterior Grant Program is part of the City of Edmonton’s initiative to improve the physical appearance and functionality of small commercial properties located in mature neighborhoods. By targeting Neighbourhood Commercial Areas within the Anthony Henday Freeway, the program incentivizes renovations that contribute to vibrant, accessible, and economically thriving local shopping areas. Eligible applicants—typically property owners or their approved agents—may receive matching reimbursement grants for eligible improvements such as upgrading windows and doors, re-cladding exteriors, adding canopies or awnings, murals, patios, and more. The program emphasizes clear street-level visibility, seasonal design considerations, pedestrian safety, accessibility, and architectural cohesion with the community. Applicants must include at least one “critical improvement” (e.g., storefront redesign, new doors/windows, murals, patios) and demonstrate how the renovation supports program design principles such as pedestrian engagement, safe and accessible spaces, and energy efficiency. Projects are evaluated by a City-led committee and approved designs are eligible for reimbursement upon project completion and inspection. The program includes two streams: one for full property redevelopment and another for small business support. Renovations must be maintained for five years post-completion.
