  • Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada
Overview of the Discovery Grants program program:

The Discovery Grants and Subatomic Physics Discovery Grants Program offered by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) is designed to support ongoing research programs with long-term goals in the natural sciences and engineering fields. The program provides funding to researchers working at Canadian universities, allowing them to explore new ideas, develop innovative research methods, and contribute to advancing knowledge in their respective fields.

Eligibility criteria of the Discovery Grants program program:
  • Faculty Members:
  • Full-time Academic Positions: The primary applicants must hold a full-time, continuing academic position at an eligible Canadian university or affiliated institution. This includes tenure-track or tenured faculty members.
  • Early Career Researchers: New faculty members and early-career researchers are encouraged to apply, as the program supports researchers at various stages of their careers.
  • Collaborative Teams:
  • The program allows for collaborative team applications, especially for interdisciplinary or large-scale research projects. However, the principal applicant must meet the general eligibility criteria and be based at a Canadian institution.
  • Research Focus:
  • Applicants must be engaged in research within the natural sciences and engineering fields, or in subatomic physics for those applying to the Subatomic Physics Discovery Grants (SAP-DG) stream.
  • Institutional Affiliation:
  • The research must be conducted at an institution that is recognized by NSERC as eligible to administer the grant. This typically includes universities and other research institutions in Canada.
  • Track Record:
  • Applicants are expected to have a strong track record of research excellence, demonstrated through prior achievements, publications, and contributions to the training of highly qualified personnel (HQP).
