Overview of the Hardware Catalyst Initiative program:

The Hardware Catalyst Initiative (HCI), led by ventureLAB, is a national hub located in York Region, Ontario, focused on supporting Canadian hardware and semiconductor companies from early-stage to scale-up. The program is designed to drive commercialization, attract investment, and grow globally competitive hardware ventures in critical technology sectors. As Canada’s only lab and incubator dedicated to hardware and semiconductor innovation, HCI offers unparalleled access to specialized equipment, infrastructure, technical expertise, and business development resources. Participants benefit from ventureLAB’s advanced hardware lab, which features prototyping tools, testing equipment, and cleanroom access, allowing companies to accelerate design, validation, and production processes without the high capital costs typically associated with hardware development. In addition to technical infrastructure, the HCI provides strategic support through mentorship, IP commercialization coaching, go-to-market strategies, investment readiness preparation, and customer acquisition guidance. The program focuses on four key verticals: semiconductors, medtech, automotive, and communications. Companies selected for the HCI must demonstrate strong technical innovation and the potential to scale within global markets. The HCI supports ventures developing both hardware and hardware-enabled technologies (including embedded systems, sensors, microelectronics, IoT devices, and integrated circuits). The program has partnerships with major industry players and public funders, making it a unique opportunity for Canadian hardware startups to grow with access to a full innovation ecosystem.

Benefits of the Hardware Catalyst Initiative program:
  • In-kind support valued up to $450,000 per venture
  • Exclusive access to ventureLABs Hardware Lab, including prototyping tools, testing systems, and cleanroom space
  • Tailored commercialization support including product roadmap development, market validation, and IP strategy
  • Mentorship from industry experts in semiconductors, medtech, automotive, and telecom
