RECREATION INFRASTRUCTURE

The Recreation Infrastructure Program by the Northern Development Initiative Trust (NDIT) provides grant funding to support the construction, rehabilitation, or significant enhancement of recreational facilities within Northern British Columbia.

Overview of the RECREATION INFRASTRUCTURE program:

This program funds community-driven projects to develop or enhance recreational spaces, supporting local governments, First Nations, and registered non-profits in building amenities that contribute to quality of life and community sustainability. Eligible projects include the construction or improvement of arenas, gymnasiums, marinas, backcountry trail networks, and more. Routine maintenance is not eligible; the focus is on meaningful upgrades or new facilities that serve multiple recreational uses and provide measurable economic benefits. Funding Amount Funding is offered at two levels: Up to $100,000 covering up to 70% of eligible project costs. Up to $300,000 covering up to 50% of eligible project costs.

Eligibility criteria of the RECREATION INFRASTRUCTURE program:
  • Eligible Applicants
  • All applicants must be located within Northern Developments service region.
  • Local governments
  • Registered not-for-profits
  • Registered First Nation bands
  • Wholly owned First Nation development corporations
  • Eligible Projects
  • The types of projects that may be eligible include, but are not limited to:
  • Arenas, gymnasiums, fitness facilities
  • Indoor/outdoor pools
  • Sports fields
  • Curling rinks
  • Stadiums
  • Golf courses
  • Exhibition/rodeo grounds
  • Campgrounds
  • Marinas, boat launches
  • Backcountry trail networks, ski facilities and backcountry cabins/shelters
  • Eligible Costs
  • Capital expenditures considered to be direct and necessary for the successful implementation of
  • An eligible project
  • Contractor fees
  • Incremental third-party project management
  • Rental of tools and equipment for construction work
  • Wages for direct project labour
  • Detailed timesheets must be kept for all employees working on the project and must include:
  • Employees name
  • Date(s) worked
  • Description of work
  • Hourly rate
  • Daily hours must break out the number hours worked on the project
