Overview of the Start a summer company: students program:

The Summer Company program, operated by the Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, supports students interested in starting new, independent businesses. It is designed to give participants hands-on experience in entrepreneurship while helping them earn income during the summer. The program offers a grant of up to $3,000, divided into two payments: the first (up to $1,500) is provided at the start to cover initial costs, while the second (up to $1,500) is given upon successful completion of the program. In addition to financial support, students benefit from personalized mentorship provided by local business professionals, who offer guidance on sales, marketing, financial management, and customer relations. Participants also gain access to networking opportunities within the local business ecosystem, learning practical strategies to navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship. Training sessions organized by the program further strengthen entrepreneurial knowledge and preparedness, ensuring participants are equipped to run their businesses successfully.

Eligibility criteria of the Start a summer company: students program:
  • Age and Residency
  • Be between 15 and 29 years of age as of April 30 of the program year.
  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident and reside in Ontario.
  • Student Status
  • Must be a student returning to school in the fall.
  • Business Requirements
  • The business must be a new, independent venture (not a continuation of an existing business).
  • Applicants must demonstrate a strong business idea and create a detailed business plan.
  • Time Commitment
  • High School Students: Must dedicate at least 280 hours to the business during the summer program.
  • Post-Secondary Students: Must dedicate at least 420 hours during the

  • Must not be working more than 12 hours per week at another job or attending school during the program.
  • Other Criteria
  • Participants must attend mandatory training sessions.
  • Applicants cannot already own or operate an existing full-time business.
