Personnel Awards for Indigenous Scholars

The 2025/26 Master’s Personnel Awards for Indigenous Scholars, jointly developed by Heart & Stroke and Brain Canada, support Indigenous Master’s students conducting research in heart and/or brain health, with the goal of advancing representation and promoting diversity in these fields.

Overview of the Personnel Awards for Indigenous Scholars program:

This program funds Indigenous scholars pursuing Master’s research that addresses cardiovascular or cerebrovascular health issues, including conditions such as heart disease, stroke, vascular cognitive impairment, and the intersections with mental health. With funding of up to $54,000 CAD per awardee, the program encourages students from First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities to focus on impactful research while receiving mentorship from experienced advisors. Heart & Stroke and Brain Canada are committed to supporting Indigenous knowledge systems and fostering a culturally inclusive research environment, ensuring that Indigenous voices contribute to advancements in Canadian health research.

Eligibility criteria of the Personnel Awards for Indigenous Scholars program:
  • Eligible applicants must:
  • Self-identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit, or Metis) and complete a self-attestation.
  • Be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons.
  • Be enrolled in or accepted to a full-time Masters program at an eligible Canadian institution by September 30, 2025.
  • Have an identified research supervisor based at their institution.
