The 2025/26 Personnel Awards for Black Scholars, jointly launched by Brain Canada and Heart & Stroke, aim to support highly qualified Black trainees dedicated to advancing research in heart and brain health.

Overview of the Personnel Awards for Black Scholars program:

This award program is dedicated to increasing the representation of Black scholars in Canadian research focused on heart and brain health, covering areas such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, vascular cognitive impairment, and associated mental health issues. With funding up to $54,000 CAD for each awardee, the program encourages Black Master’s students of African or Caribbean heritage to conduct impactful research under the guidance of experienced mentors. This initiative reflects a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, addressing underrepresentation in these fields and fostering an inclusive academic environment.

Eligibility criteria of the Personnel Awards for Black Scholars program:
  • Eligible applicants must:
  • Self-identify as Black (African or Caribbean heritage) and complete a self-attestation and personal declaration within their application.
  • Be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
  • Be enrolled in or accepted into a full-time Masters program at a Canadian institution focused on heart or brain health research.
  • Have a designated research supervisor based at the Canadian institution where their research will be conducted.
